The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) invites applicants for The Mary’s Scholarship for Homelessness Awareness and Advocacy. Applications are due no later than Monday, November 3, and should be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Affairs (Robinson Hall, A255).

Mary Bauer, MA Foreign Languages ’90, had been a long-time supporter of helping the homeless, but her interest crystallized into a calling after the death of her husband Jeff Chamberlain, an associate professor at George Mason University.

Bauer took an interest in the issues of poverty and homelessness after being posted at the American embassy in Sudan during her government career and wanted to do more than just write a check to an organization. Now a college professor, she wanted to foster a similar passion for advocacy in students and established this special scholarship fund.

The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to any CHSS student, and the funds may be used to defray any college-related expenses. Applicants should submit a two-page essay along with their major, year, G-number and resume. The essay should be no longer than two pages and address how their experience with homelessness changed or defined their perspective on the subject.
