New Century College students participated with Associate Professor Tom Wood in Conservation Science Day at the Smithsonian's National Zoo on September 12. Over 1,000 zoo visitors attended the event and learned about salamanders in the Piedmont, the migration of birds and Native American values toward nature. Other area conservation groups joined in the day-long event that was free and open to the public.

Visitors also learned about the educational opportunities at the Smithsonian Mason School of Conservation available to Integrative Studies and other Mason majors. Integrative Studies students Melissa Fuerst, Nikki Jawadian and Kelsey Heath represented NCC, interacting with people from all walks of life to offer information about conservation in the metro DC area.
