2015 School Environmental Action Showcase

On April 9, 2015 more than 1,000 local elementary, middle and high school students will participate in the fourth annual School Environmental Action Showcase that will be held at the Center for the Arts. New Century College assistant professor Cindy Smith is one of the event organizers and looks forward igniting more students’ curiosity and environmental awareness.

Student participants will display their projects in subject areas including “Caring for our Watersheds,” “KidWind Challenge,” “Recycled Mascot Challenge” and more general green or eco projects that they have designed and implemented in their schools or communities.

In addition to viewing a myriad of exciting environmental projects, students will learn which teams and schools will win cash awards and advance to various state-wide competitions.

Smith said, “This is a wonderful opportunity to work with young people and show them how exciting and fun environmental science can be—especially when they design their own projects answering challenges they see in their neighborhoods.”

Smith’s Mason students will help facilitate the event, assisting with logistics and setup. Students will also join the panel of judges with representatives from hosts Dominion Power, Earth Force, NoVA Outside and the Potomac Environmental Research and Education Center.

One fun highlight of the day is a guest “Tweeter,” Tricia Moore who tours the event with her Sun Conure while reporting event updates via social media.
