Meet Kira Lindenhäll, an SIS Senior majoring in Environmental & Sustainability Studies.
How did you decide on the EVSS program?
I wanted to blend my passion for natural sciences with the study of human-environment interactions. EVSS offered the perfect mix of humanities and STEM, making Mason the clear choice for me. Throughout my studies, I’ve explored global environmental policy, sustainable development, ecology, climate change, and more. This was the only school in Virginia that had the exact program I wanted, and I definitely made the right decision!
Tell us about any internships, jobs, or volunteer experiences related to your EVSS program
My most notable volunteer experience at Mason was at the President's Park Greenhouse. I was able to gain hands-on experience in microbiology research, which is something I have never had the chance to do before Mason. I collaborated with a team to maintain an aquaponic tomato system and indoor worm composting bins, which taught me more about sustainable food production. Additionally, through sustainable agriculture initiatives, including seed propagation and organic pest management, I reinforced my knowledge of ecology, climate resilience, and sustainable development—all core aspects of my EVSS studies.
Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.
As part of my commitment to sustainability, I’ve been a vegetarian for the past five years. This decision was driven by my desire to reduce my environmental footprint, particularly the carbon emissions and resource use associated with meat production. Over time, it has also deepened my understanding of sustainable food systems and inspired me to explore plant-based agriculture, food security, and ethical consumption. It’s a lifestyle choice that aligns with my passion for environmental conservation and reinforces the values I bring to my academic and professional pursuits.
What have you learned in an EVSS/INTS class that really surprised you or changed your perspective?
One of my biggest takeaways was from my environmental justice class, INTS 334. I realized how deeply environmental issues are tied to social and racial injustices. I was especially surprised by how often policies meant to protect the environment, like conservation efforts, have harmed Indigenous communities by displacing them from their ancestral lands. This class made me see that environmental justice isn’t just about protecting nature—it’s about ensuring that all people, regardless of race or income, have equal access to clean air, water, and land.
What do you think prospective EVSS students need to know?
Step outside your comfort zone! Some of my best learning happened outside the classroom, through clubs, volunteering, and especially studying abroad. That experience has forever changed me, and I’m so glad I took the leap. The Global Education Office has 200+ programs—go explore!
