MA in Higher Education and Student Development
Victoria Barrett, 2025

I'm an Army veteran and former special education teacher who relocated to northern Virginia from Colorado Springs to attend graduate school at George Mason University full-time.
What was your specific area of study and how did you choose it?
I am studying Higher Education and Student Development. I chose this specific area because I wanted to stay in the field of education, but transition into a career in student affairs.
How did your academic experiences in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences impact you?
I have had a lovely academic experience in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Academically, I have had a lot of freedom and encouragement to explore topics of interest such as historically underrepresented and marginalized student populations and the adoption of new digital tools in higher education.
Which accomplishments during your time at George Mason are you most proud of?
I am proud of and grateful for the connections that I have made at George Mason with students, professional staff, and faculty. It feels good being part of a community that stands up for one another and celebrates each other's achievements.
Are there faculty or staff members who made a difference during your George Mason career?
Some of the most influential staff and faculty members who have had a positive impact during my time at George Mason University are Lu Geza-Kelemen, Josh Kinchen, Professor Kelly Schrum, and Professor Jeffrey Grim.
What advice would you give to an incoming cohort of graduate students?
I would tell them to be confident in their abilities and to follow their research interests wherever they may lead.
What are your current career plans following graduation? What are your long-term career goals?
I would love to find a full-time position in a student-affairs position that supports increasing access, inclusion, and student success for all students. Long term, I just hope to work for higher education institutions whose values match my own and make a positive impact on the lives of students regardless of the role I am in.
