MA in Higher Education and Student Development
Ashley Marshall-Lanier, 2024

Describe your dissertation, thesis, or capstone. How did you choose your specific area of study?
I found my specific area of study by taking non-degree courses first to see what I was interested in.
How did your academic experiences in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences impact you?
My experience in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences taught me how to pursue a graduate degree as a student parent and how to seek out resources and support as needed.
Which accomplishments during your time at Mason are you most proud of?
I am most proud of graduating with a high GPA while working full-time and parenting.
Are there faculty or staff members who made a difference during your Mason career?
Professor Kelly Schrum was an integral part of my journey. She encouraged me and challenged me at the same time. I was able to share my triumphs and my challenges with her and her gentle guidance helped me continue my pursuit of the master's degree.
What advice would you give to an incoming cohort of graduate students?
Find your passion. Follow your own journey. Forget comparisons. Finish when you finish.
What are your current career plans following graduation? What are your long-term career goals?
My current career plans are to continue in academic advising. My long-term career goals include becoming teaching faculty and hopefully a Dean of Student Success.
