On May 22, SIS Associate Professor Dr. Mark Thurston and Associate Director of Student Services Dr. Sara Montiel, will collaborate on a session titled “Advising is Emotional Work: How to Care Without the Crash” as part of this year’s Mason Academic Advising Symposium. The interactive workshop will explore academic advising as a helping profession—one that, like counseling, teaching, and social work, involves significant emotional labor. Advisors are often the first point of contact for students in distress, and the session focused on how that invisible load can affect advisors’ well-being over time. Drawing from Dr. Thurston’s INTS course Self-Care and Well-Being for the Helping Professionals, the session gives the participants space to reflect, introducing practices for completing the “stress cycle,” and offering tangible strategies for self-care and professional resilience. This collaborative effort emphasizes the importance of supporting those who support students—and modeling wellness as part of a sustainable advising culture.
