We are pleased to share with you that this year’s Mason Nation 9/11 Day of Service is scheduled for Thursday, September 11th, in the Johnson Center, Dewberry Hall. A variety of service projects are available for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members to choose from and participate in. Registration is NOW OPEN. Program Highlights
Arlington Police, Fire, Sheriff, and ECC 9/11 Memorial Race
Join the George Mason University Team on Saturday, September 6, 2025, for the Arlington Police, Fire, Sheriff, and ECC 9/11 Memorial Race. Since its first run in 2002, this event has brought together more than 40,000 participants and raised over $1 million for 9/11-related charities. Blood Drive
We are excited to partner with INOVA Blood Donor Services to host the 9/11 Day of Service Blood Drive at George Mason University. If you are interested in donating blood, please book an appointment online at: https://911day.gmu.edu/blooddrive/.
Mason Nation 9/11 Day of Service Opening Ceremonies and Thank You Lunch for Volunteers, First Responders, and Veterans
Join us on Thursday, September 11th from 12:00pm-1:00pm for our official welcome and kick-off in the Johnson Center, Dewberry Hall. The ceremony will include live music, presentation of colors, speakers, and a catered lunch. If you are attending the lunch, please be sure to RSVP at: https://911day.gmu.edu/thankyou/ no later than September 3rd.
Pattie Elementary School – P.O.P. Club Partnership
We are excited to share that 4th and 5th grade students from Pattie Elementary will be visiting George Mason and participating in the 9/11 Day of Service. In partnership with Van Metre Companies and their generous donations, we will be filling backpacks with food for students in need and decorating cards and flowerpots for residents at Potomac Assisted Living. We hope you can join and support some of our youngest future George Mason Patriots 😊
Opportunities to Donate
Crayon Initiative
In partnership with The Crayon Initiative, we are collecting both new and used crayons. Crayons will be remanufactured into new, free crayons for kids in children's hospitals to help color their world. Crayons can be dropped off during the 9/11 Day of Service (Johnson Center, Dewberry Hall) anytime between 9:00am-2:00pm. If you are unable to attend the 9/11 Day of Service, please drop off at the Center for Leadership and Intercultural Engagement (The Hub, Room 2400).

Faculty and Staff Volunteer Leave
George Mason faculty and staff are encouraged to join the 9/11 Day of Service on Thursday, September 11th. Full-time classified employees and administrative/professional faculty receive sixteen hours of paid leave per calendar year (pro-rated for part-time) to provide volunteer services through eligible non-profit organizations within or outside their communities. Such service may be provided as a member of a service organization or through authorized school assistance. Human Resources has approved the 9/11 Day of Service for Volunteer Leave usage. Save the Date: Service Fair
The Office of Community Engagement and Civic Learning is excited to invite you to the 2025 Service Fair. This year’s fair will take place on Tuesday, September 23rd from 11:00am-2:00pm in Wilkins Plaza – a central outside location at George Mason University’s Fairfax Campus. Students, faculty, staff, and local community members will be able to connect with community-based organizations to learn about ways to volunteer, as well as explore civic engagement efforts, service-learning partnerships, and opportunities for community-based research collaborations. Faculty and staff are also encouraged to invite their socially driven community partner organizations to participate—registered partners will be provided with a table, lunch, and parking validation. They should complete the Service Fair Sign-Up Form and claim their spot by 9/15! The form should take no longer than 5 minutes.
