A Leadership Course Taught by Leaders -- Including the University President

New Century College is offering a one of a kind educational experience this fall with NCLC 475-007: President’s Leadership Seminar. In this four-credit-hour course, offered in partnership with the Mason Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Office, students take part in a cohort leadership experience led by George Mason University president, Dr. Ángel Cabrera, and Arison Professor of Values Leadership, Dr. Gregory Unruh. Course discussions are based on classic and contemporary writings that link leadership, innovation, diversity, and entrepreneurship with positivity and happiness. The experience is designed to be interactive and engaging, and will encourage students to develop and refine their own personal leadership style. Students will learn about themselves and their leadership approach by examining and challenging their own thought processes and beliefs.

President Cabrera was named the sixth president of George Mason University effective July 2012. Prior to joining Mason, he served as the president of Thunderbird School of Global Management in Arizona from 2004 to 2012, and as professor and dean of IE Business School in Madrid, Spain, from 1998 to 2004. Thunderbird is regarded as the world’s leading graduate school of international management, and the Financial Times ranked the IE Business School among the top 10 business schools in the world. During the last decade, Cabrera pioneered efforts to educate women entrepreneurs in emerging markets and co-founded The Oath Project, an international initiative to establish a code of conduct for business leaders. In 2011 the Financial Times recognized him as one of the top 20 business school leaders in the world. In 2008, the World Economic Forum appointed Cabrera chairman of the Global Agenda Council for promoting entrepreneurship, and The Aspen Institute named him a Henry Crown Fellow. The World Economic Forum also named him a “Global Leader for Tomorrow” in 2002 and a “Young Global Leader” in 2005.

Cabrera’s expertise in international business and higher education has been recognized by top international organizations. He is a frequent speaker at prestigious international forums, and he has written numerous papers in leading academic journals. His views on global leadership, higher education, and corporate citizenship have been quoted by leading global media, including The Economist, Time, CNN, CNBC, El País, Forbes, the International Herald Tribune, and The New York Times.

Dr. Unruh is an expert on sustainable business strategy. An outspoken advocate of environmental sustainability and climate responsibility, he has served as a technical reviewer for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the group that shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former U.S. President Al Gore. He is the creator of Carbon Lock-in theory, a line of academic research that has received thousands of citations and spurred new lines of climate policy research around the globe. He has been recognized as a strategic partner of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), an initiative dedicated to implementing socially and environmentally responsible business practices globally. Author of numerous best-selling leadership books, Dr. Unruh co-founded the Center for Eco-Intelligent Management with the renowned “green” designer William McDonough, and has published his research findings in the Harvard Business Review, the MIT Sloan Management Review and Forbes Magazine.
