NCLC 203 Cornerstones Students Visit the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

On January 24, 2012, Dr. Julie Owen, Dr. Duhita Mahatmya, Dr. Wendy Wagner, Jeff Freels, Todd Stafford, and Tai Nelson accompanied their NCLC 203 Inquiry to Action: Facilitating Change students on a field trip to the Newseum in downtown DC. The Newseum features the most comprehensive collection of Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs ever assembled as well as written and taped interviews with many of the photographers.

The Cornerstones students examined the role of the news media in mediating knowledge. They asked the following questions:

What role does a journalist play in capturing images of world events?

What social, ethical, political, and cultural elements are embedded in these situations?

How do these photographs represent larger themes about the role of media in society?

"I hope the students also gained a new perspective on how their own interpretation of world events is affected by media coverage," says Dr. Owen.
