Meet Gabriel Silveira, an SIS Senior, who is majoring in Integrative Studies with a concentration in Leadership and Organizational Development. He plays soccer as a left winger for the Men's Soccer team.
How do you balance academics and athletics?
I created an organized study and training routine that allows me to stay focused on both obligations while not compromising my athletic performance. The key is being effective on time management such as using planners, setting deadlines, and making the most of study breaks. I try to complete tasks ahead of time as well as do my assignments during vacation or downtime to avoid last-minute stress. When I can, I always seek academic assistance, such as tutoring or study groups, which will make sure that I have academic success while balancing athletic responsibilities. Another important thing is to preserve physical and mental health through psychological assistance or meditation. Proper rest, a healthy diet, and stress management skills all help me to improve my performance.
What has been your favorite INTS class and/or professor so far, and why?
My favorite professor is Graziella McCarron. She teaches Leadership and Organization Problem-Solving. She stood out to me because our classes pushed my way of thinking and encouraged in-depth discussions about real-world situations. I had to step out of my comfort zone so many times. She was always engaging teaching approach and her ability to relate course material to real-world applications made learning enjoyable. I loved how our class included multiple perspectives and interactive projects, which allowed me to apply concepts outside of the classroom.
What advice would you give to an incoming student-athlete?
To be mentally and physically ready. Also, to always think in advance, and to be willing to overcome any obstacles that you might face. Focus on the things that are under your control, everything else will be a consequence of your focus.
