The Center for Leadership and Intercultural Engagement through the Building Bridges South Africa (BBSA): Breaking the Walls, seeks to provide student participants with an experiential, alternative break, program that create transformational experiences addressing global social and cultural inequities.
Dates: June 12, 2025 – July 13, 2025
Objectives:
This alternative break program integrates community-based education and critical engaged citizen theoretical frameworks with student affairs practices. Towards that end we aim to:
- Spend 4 weeks (June 13 – July 13) in Cape Town, South Africa, exploring and critiquing cultural and environmental factors that promote successful socio-cultural strategies
- Develop critical skills, knowledge, and capabilities to engage reciprocally with various communities through thoughtful reflection, integrated learning, and becoming empowered to work with others to lead, envision, and create change.
- Evaluate the relationship between historical and present manifestations of racism, socio-economic disparities, and sexist gender tropes in South Africa through critical analysis and competing perspectives.
- Design and implement community engagement projects using academic coursework to frame on-campus and community projects.
- Explore and critique cultural and environmental factors that promote successful gender prevention and care strategies.

- Develop a social action project that fits with your academic program
- Design and implement community engagement projects using academic frameworks
- Explore Cape Town and South Africa with included excursions and site visits!
