My name is Kira Lindenhäll, I am an SIS Senior majoring in Environmental and Sustainability Studies with a Concentration in Climate Change and Society, and a Minor in Global Affairs. Read more about my internship at the U.S. Embassy in Vienna, Austria.
One of the requirements to graduate with my major is an internship, and looking back I am very grateful for this push. For my credit, I studied abroad in Vienna, Austria. I had the unique opportunity to work in the General Services Office (GSO), where I gained valuable experience in both administrative and event planning tasks. I assisted with organizing the annual 4th of July celebration for Ambassador Kennedy, helped design welcome kits for new employees, and contributed to DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) events. One of my key responsibilities was gathering photos of Embassy properties to create photo templates for new residents. This further helped develop my attention to detail and organizational skills.
Looking back, this internship was an incredibly rewarding part of my study abroad experience. It provided me with a deeper understanding of diplomacy, cross-cultural work environments, and the logistics of organizing high-profile events. I highly encourage students looking for internships to seek out opportunities that challenge them to step out of their comfort zones; it is an experience they won't forget.
How did you decide on the EVSS program?
I wanted to blend my passion for natural sciences with the study of human-environment interactions. EVSS offered the perfect mix of humanities and STEM, making Mason the clear choice for me. Throughout my studies, I’ve explored global environmental policy, sustainable development, ecology, climate change, and more. This was the only school in Virginia that had the exact program I wanted, and I definitely made the right decision!
Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.
As part of my commitment to sustainability, I’ve been a vegetarian for the past five years. This decision was driven by my desire to reduce my environmental footprint, particularly the carbon emissions and resource use associated with meat production. Over time, it has also deepened my understanding of sustainable food systems and inspired me to explore plant-based agriculture, food security, and ethical consumption. It’s a lifestyle choice that aligns with my passion for environmental conservation and reinforces the values I bring to my academic and professional pursuits.
What do you think prospective EVSS students need to know?
Step outside your comfort zone! Some of my best learning happened outside the classroom, through clubs, volunteering, and especially studying abroad. That experience has forever changed me, and I’m so glad I took the leap. The Global Education Office has 200+ programs—go explore!
