Philippines Study Abroad: Summer 2020 - 6 credits

Registration is now going on for the Philippines Summer 2020 study abroad program, a 6-credit course in Human Trafficking and Community Engagement (Environmental Issues and Cultural Understanding). The program runs from June 24 (Arrival in Manila) and ends on July 25 (Return to the US or wherever your next destination will be). HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PROGRAM

Working with children and youth who have been victims and survivors of sex and labor trafficking, exploring the push and pull factors of human trafficking such as extreme impoverishment and domestic violence/abuse among others, understanding resilience of survivors of human trafficking,  Service-Learning through Silliman University, visiting local communities directly affected by aerial spraying (banned in the US) conducted by Dole and Del Monte transnational corporations, swimming with whale sharks (Butanding), dolphin watching, island hopping, homestay for a few days, ocean cruise, organic rice planting, plowing a ricefield with a water buffalo, exploring natural resources, visiting organic farming and fair trade women's organization, travel all over the country, indigenous shopping, exploring Filipino culture: cuisine, dances, singing, and many more... Some of the organization/programs that we will be working with on human trafficking issues include: Tambayan Center for Children’s Rights in Davao City, Voice of the Free (formerly Mindanao Forum) outside Manila, and Casa Esperanza in Dumaguete City.

 

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM COST

The Philippines program cost covers all 6 tuition credits, most meals/snacks, hotel accommodation, excursions, transportation while in the country (airfare/boat/land), medical/evacuation insurance. What is not included is your personal pocket money, including your roundtrip ticket, which you can find some best deals online. The program deposit is part of the total cost. It is not an additional expense.

 

SCHOLARSHIPS/FINANCIAL AID

Study abroad grants and scholarships are available at the Global Education Office at Mason. You can also apply for financial aid. Discuss is with your financial aid adviser. You may also set up a GoFundMe via your facebook page. Some participants in the past did the GoFundMe, and they were successful in raising funds for the program. 

 

NON-GMU STUDENTS

The Philippines summer study abroad program is open to non-GMU students as well (in case you have friends from other universities/colleges who may be interested), including professionals who are interested in participating. You will receive a GMU transcript of records for your course grade, which can/will be transferred to your school/university upon request.
