*Spring 2020 Commencement & Degree Celebrations postponed indefinitely*
We have decided to postpone Commencement and our degree celebrations indefinitely. This was among the most difficult decisions we have had to make. These are time-honored traditions that students and their families look forward to, and we did not make this decision lightly. Our hope is to either reschedule at a later date, and/or to find a creative way to celebrate our students online. We will be seeking input from our graduating students on how they would like to be celebrated during these unprecedented times. We’ll be in touch soon on this, as well.
Below is information about the May 2020 graduation process. If you intend to complete ALL of your remaining Integrative Studies, Environmental and Sustainability Studies or BIS degree requirements during the spring 2020 semester, you are eligible to graduate in May. If you still have remaining degree requirements to complete over the summer you MUST apply for summer graduation. However, all summer graduates are still permitted to 'walk' in the spring graduation ceremonies.
It is your responsibility to make sure that each of the graduation steps is completed. Failure to complete any of the steps will delay your graduation.
When to apply
The Graduation Application must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar by February 23, 2020. IF YOU HAVE REMAINING COURSEWORK TO COMPLETE DURING THE SUMMER DO NOT APPLY FOR SPRING DEGREE CONFERRAL! YOU MUST SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION FOR THE SUMMER DEGREE CONFERRAL. You can still participate in the spring ceremony with a summer application.

May Graduation Ceremony Information
May and August 2020 graduates are also encouraged and eligible to attend the Friday, May 15th 2020 Mason Commencement Ceremony. The Office of Events Management will mail ceremony information to graduates in late February 2020. Questions about May 2020 commencement and convocations (tickets, cap and gown, ceremony dates, etc.) can be answered by visiting their website (events.gmu.edu/). Students do not walk across the stage at commencement, but rather colleges and majors are recognized as a whole.
Also, the School of Integrative Studies will be holding its Convocation ceremony on Wednesday, May 13th @ 10:00 am in the Center for the Arts auditorium. It is at this ceremony that your name will be read out as you walk across the stage. The ceremony lasts approximately 90 minutes. More details will be sent to the SIS, ESS and BIS student listservs in Spring 2020.
Your diploma will be mailed to your diploma address (given on the on-line Graduation Application) in late June 2020. You will receive your diploma only after all of your final grades are submitted and you are cleared for graduation. The diploma will list your degree (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Individual Studies), your major (Integrative Studies, Environmental and Sustainability Studies or Individualized Studies), and the title of your Concentration.
All in-progress grades (IN, IP, NR), even if they are not applicable to the degree, must be resolved within six weeks after the date of degree conferral. The absolute deadline for grades to be posted with the Registrar for May 2020 graduates is June 26, 2020. If you are unable to finish the course work during this six-week period, you must withdraw your current Graduation Application and reapply for the next scheduled graduation.
