Section Information for Fall 2022

Why in one of the wealthiest countries in the world do so many people live in poverty? What do we mean by the term poverty? What are its causes, and how do we try to reduce it? This course examines poverty in the United States and the social policies intended to address it. Throughout our investigation, we will explore the processes causing some groups and areas to have higher poverty rates than others, as well as how poverty interacts with key facets of life like the family, education, the labor market, food, housing, and the criminal justice system. Cross listed with GOVT 464-002 and INTS 375-005.
