This course explores how society affects literature and literature affects society by examining prominent authors from around the world who have been banned or challenged for various reasons. Who decides what should be available for public consumption and what should be censored? In this course we will discuss how certain authors skirted public outcry while still challenging social norms and others experienced ridicule, litigation and imprisonment.
