Section Information for Summer 2014

Humans have an integrative history that transcends the histories of particular regions, nations, or ethnic groups.  The complex interaction of world cultures necessitates a shared sense of humanity—of “global citizenship”.  This course will follow the story of humanity from the Stone Age to the twenty-first century: from humankind’s adoption of agriculture, to the birth of cities, to the advent of globalization.  Using food & drink as a window on the history of mankind, we will explore how history, culture, politics, sociology, and religion have determined how and what people have eaten through the ages.
