This seminar-style course focuses on the intersection between substance use, addiction, children, families, and identity. Students will examine the impact of substance use and addiction on individuals and families through a broad multidisciplinary lens and with consideration of the intersectionality of various identities (e.g., gender, individuals’ roles within family/society, socioeconomic status, high/low risk status, and race/ethnicity) and related experiences with addiction. Course content will cover a range of topics including but not limited to: a broad overview of addiction and substance use disorders, discussion of the impact of addiction on children, parenting, and family processes, stigma and triggers for relapse, gender and socioeconomic differences in risk for and development of addiction, and an overview of research methods in addictions research. Course material will primarily involve reading, discussing, and presenting recent theoretical and empirical peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters.
