Section Information for Spring 2014This course will explore the ground-breaking work of UCLA scholars Alexander and Helen Astin which was published as Cultivating the Spirit: How College Can Enhance Students' Inner Lives. We will explore the science and applications of the five dimensions of “spirituality” that they discovered in their extensive research investigation with tens of thousands of college students: meaning, equanimity, ethic of caring, charitable involvement, and ecumenical worldview. And we will learn specific practices to support personal well-being - practices which have to potential to cultivate some or all five of these dimensions of spirituality. This is a hybrid course: 80% classroom and 20% online learning. Classroom sessions are four all-day sessions (10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) immediately before the start of the spring semester (i.e., January 15-18), plus six Friday sessions from 10:30 am to 1:10 p..m. (Jan. 24, Feb. 7 and 28, March 21, April 11, and May 2. There is a $25 lab fee for this course.
