Jayna Tavarez received her Bachelor of Arts in Integrative Studies with a concentration in Social Justice and Human Rights. She also earned aMaster of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Social Justice and Human Rights and a graduate certificate in Women and Gender Studies. Her thesis, I needed to use my voice as a bisexual activist, not just an activist: Bisexual College Student Activists and their Experiences with Biphobia within LGBTQ Spaces on Campusexamined the challenges bisexual students experience within spaces on college campuses intended to be inclusive of their identity. Jayna is passionate about student affairs and dedicated herself to serving Mason’s Housing and Residence Life, LGBTQ Resources, and University Career Services during her time as a student.
Jayna Tavarez just won the Outstanding Student Paper Award for an essay she wrote based on her MAIS-SJHR masters thesis. She received the award from the LGBTQ Research Symposium, a national gathering in its seventh year, which met this year in Illinois. She was competing again other masters and doctoral students. Jayna hopes to have her essay published in an academic journal soon.
